Adding value through interior design at Chichester Festival Theatre

The dream

To support the Chichester Festival Theatre in attracting more visitors and a wider demographic to the theatre’s open spaces, including lobby, bars, and cafés by bringing their new branding and core values to life through design.

The details

Deploying the theatre’s new colour palette and working with sustainable materials and suppliers, we created a brighter, warmer, and more attractive space that has not only benefitted our local community by improved the CFT’s bottom-line through attracting more people to use its shared spaces.

Designed for our wonderful community

Reimagining the interiors of Chichester Festival Theatre has been an ongoing project for Randell Design Group since 2021 and covers the lobby, cafés, and bars of the main theatre as well as the bar at the Minerva Theatre. Our brief was to design the space to align with Chichester Festival Theatre’s new branding and core values, with a focus on community, inclusivity, sustainability, and creativity. In line with this, we aimed for the spaces to become brighter, more welcoming and to take advantage of the theatre’s parkland setting.

For phase one at the main theatre, our goal was to ensure that the expansive foyer, two identical cafes and bar were reimagined for the reopening of the theatre following lockdown. These spaces not only cater for theatre goers but attract wider community members and groups. On a tight budget, we were able to add colour, lighting, furniture, fabric, signage, and planting to create warm and inviting community spaces. As a result, we have helped Chichester Festival Theatre see a dramatic increase in footfall to these space and growth in revenue from the cafés and bar.

Sustainability is key throughout our partnership with Chichester Festival Theatre. Through the reimagination interiors project, we aimed to re-use and recover furniture where possible, use sustainable products and employ biophilic design. New tabletops were made from recycled yoghurt pots, and we specified the world’s first eco-friendly bean bags made with compostable filling and low-carbon lighting. Together, we also ensured that we supported regional and local suppliers and craftspeople, wherever possible.

Growing on the success of phase one of the interiors refresh at Chichester Festival Theatre, we were asked to reimagine the bar at the adjacent Minerva Theatre. The bar was dark, tired, and underutilised. With some clever reupholstery, new lighting and the addition of colour, material, and planting, we were able to transform the Minerva Bar into a bright and welcoming venue both theatre groups and the wider community.
