Stunning renovation and contemporary extension in the South Downs National Park
The dream
A forever home for a family that loves the outdoors – blending old and new while taking full advantage of the views across the countryside.
The details
We love the sense of calm and serenity that has been created, the use of natural materials and the incredible ever-changing views from sunrise to sunset.
Designed to make the most of the view
This contemporary extension and whole house refurbishment to two adjoining Georgian cottages was designed to take full advantage of their rural location and views of the South Downs. This home was a real labour of love as it was renovated and extended during the Covid period, providing a challenging landscape to complete the build on time. Architect, Brid Carr, worked alongside other consultants to ensure this home met strict planning considerations across heritage, local associations, and the South Downs National Park. The design incorporates two glass extensions at both ends of the home, creating a large new kitchen and annex.
The kitchen has a Siberian larch canopy and now includes areas to read, relax, entertain, and enjoy the natural surroundings, while the matching annex houses comfortable accommodation for guests and extended family. The interiors work in harmony with the home’s rural views with greens and neutral tones dominant throughout, and the knapped West Sussex flint takes centre stage both internally and externally. The clean lines of the modern architecture juxtaposed with flint is where this home has really found its balance.
“We are thrilled with our home and the design reflects our vision beautifully."

“We worked closely with the client to develop a family home that functioned perfectly for them, their teenage sons and lively spaniels. Introducing the two contemporary extensions created space for relaxation and brought a sense of opening up to the garden and daylight. Stitching together the original cottages with a modern glazed link meant the identity of the Georgian cottages remained intact yet were revitalised to suit modern living."
